Voibe — precise on-device docs, Apple Silicon required for local

Voibe publishes one of the clearest explanations of on-device dictation. In that mode, the Neural Engine transcribes on the Mac and nothing about the dictation transits the network. Windows — and Intel Macs — use zero-retention cloud instead. Public pricing includes $7.50 per month, $59 per year, or $149 lifetime.

On Device AI — local workspace; voice typing is one feature

On Device AI is a local ChatGPT-style workspace for Apple devices: 200+ models, document libraries, meeting notes, and voice typing that can use Apple STT, Whisper, or Parakeet. Rewrite modes can stay local or call Claude or GPT if you configure them. It is not a Windows dictation app.

Apple Dictation — free, built in, sometimes on-device

Apple Dictation needs no install. On Apple silicon it can process supported languages on-device; other languages, Intel Macs, and some longer takes can still send audio to Apple. It is the right default for a short message. It is not a dedicated dictation product: no private second brain, a silence cutoff, and no Windows path.
