VeloxWaves vs On Device AI: Dictation App or Local AI Workspace?

August 18, 2026 · 7 min read

On Device AI and VeloxWaves both keep work on the hardware by default, but they are different products. On Device AI is a local AI workspace for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro: chat, documents, meetings, and voice typing. VeloxWaves is a desktop dictation app that types into any field and stores what you said in a private knowledge graph.

Voice typing is the overlap. It is not the same product.

On Device AI's voice-typing guide describes the familiar loop: press a trigger key on a Mac, speak, and polished text is typed into email, Slack, or an editor. On iPhone, a custom keyboard does the same. Correction modes include Cleanup, Rewrite, Translate, and Literal, and rewrite can use local Llama or a cloud model.

VeloxWaves is that desktop loop as the whole product: hold the shortcut, local speech recognition, insert at the cursor. There is no cloud rewrite provider to attach. Formatting stays conservative so the words you spoke are the words that land.

If you want an iPhone keyboard plus local chat with 200+ models, On Device AI is the broader tool. If you want Windows dictation that never offers a cloud speech API, VeloxWaves is the narrower, stricter tool.

On Device AI is stronger as a local AI workstation

On Device AI runs GGUF and MLX models on Apple hardware, imports documents into Knowledge Libraries, records meetings with speaker labels, and can opt into 19+ cloud APIs. That is a private ChatGPT alternative, not only a dictation utility.

VeloxWaves also runs local models, but they serve dictation, a knowledge graph, translation, and on-device answers — not a general multi-agent studio. Hardware tiers pick what fits the machine. The app is meant to stay light at rest.

Windows is the practical split

On Device AI is an Apple-ecosystem app. VeloxWaves transcribes locally on Windows. Teams that share PCs, or individuals whose work machine is not a Mac, cannot take the On Device AI voice-typing path with them.

Apple-only users should still compare the jobs. Meeting recorder plus document chat points at On Device AI. All-day cursor dictation plus a searchable transcript graph points at VeloxWaves.

Pricing

On Device AI is free to download. Local workflows can run without an account; Pro features and cloud providers are optional and may need your own API keys.

VeloxWaves is free — unlimited local dictation and the rest of the on-device assistant at no cost, with no account and no word caps.

Who should choose each app?

VeloxWaves is the stronger fit for on-device dictation as a daily keyboard replacement on Windows or Mac, especially when transcripts should remain a private second brain.

On Device AI is the stronger fit for Apple users who want local models, document libraries, meeting notes, and voice typing inside one workspace.

  • Choose VeloxWaves for system-wide desktop dictation without a cloud speech mode.
  • Choose On Device AI for a local Apple AI workspace where voice typing is one surface.
  • You can use both if the Mac is for local chat and the PC still needs private dictation.
