VeloxWaves vs Granola: On-Device Meeting Notes or a Cloud AI Notepad?
August 19, 2026 · 8 min read
VeloxWaves and Granola both capture a meeting from your laptop without putting a bot in Zoom or Meet. They disagree about the next step. Granola sends audio to cloud transcription providers and stores notes on AWS. VeloxWaves transcribes and summarizes on your computer.

The overlap is bot-free capture. The split is where STT runs.
Granola's product and privacy docs are explicit: the app runs on your device, captures microphone and system audio, and does not join the meeting as a participant. Transcription is still a cloud step. Audio is deleted after that step. Notes are stored on AWS in the United States.
VeloxWaves also skips the meeting bot. Capture happens on the computer that is in the call. Speech recognition and the meeting summary run on that computer. There is no cloud transcription mode to turn off.
Those are both coherent privacy strategies. They are not the same architecture. Zero-retention cloud still sends audio to a remote model. On-device means the audio never takes that trip.
Granola is stronger as a meeting notepad with handoff
Granola is built for people who already type during calls. It blends those notes with the transcript and produces an enhanced note. It detects calendar meetings, works on iPhone and Android, and on Business connects to HubSpot, Attio, Notion, Slack, Zapier, and MCP.
VeloxWaves does not do that work. It does not auto-start from a calendar, sit in on a call you skipped, or push a recap into a CRM. If those integrations are the product, Granola is the better fit.
VeloxWaves is stronger when the transcript must stay local
After a meeting, VeloxWaves can keep the transcript in a private knowledge graph on the same machine. Search, translation, and on-device answers use that store. Dictation into any desktop app uses the same local speech path.
Granola notes are private by default until you share them, which is a sharing control, not a local speech model. Free and Business plans may use anonymised data for Granola's own models unless you opt out. Third-party providers are contractually blocked from training, per Granola's FAQ.
Pricing
Granola Basic is free with limited in-app history. Business is $14 per user per month with no annual discount. Enterprise starts at $35 per user per month. Granola pricing checked August 22, 2026; plans can change.
VeloxWaves is free — unlimited local dictation and meeting notes with no word caps and no account. Paid per-seat Teams licensing for organizations is planned.
Who should choose each app?
Neither product is a HIPAA-certified meeting recorder. Granola says it is not HIPAA and cannot sign a BAA. VeloxWaves does not present local processing as compliance. Obtain consent from other people on the call either way.
- Choose VeloxWaves for on-device speech recognition and a private second brain.
- Choose Granola for typed notes, calendar, mobile, and CRM or MCP handoff with cloud STT.
- A shorter landing page lives at granola-alternative if that search is the actual job.
